Why Movement is One of the Best Investments You’ll Ever Make

Every year, Exercise Right Week shines a spotlight on simple yet powerful strategies to help you completely change your life.

Exercise Right for YOUR Life.

This national initiative, powered by Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA), encourages Australians of all ages, fitness levels and health backgrounds to discover how the right exercise can improve physical health, mental wellbeing, confidence, independence and quality of life.

And honestly? We couldn’t agree more.

Exercise isn’t just about six-packs, marathons or burpees that make you question your life choices. As Exercise Physiologists, we tailor your exercise plan to you and your goals, so we can help you do the things that actually matter to you, whether it be:

  • Playing with your grandkids without becoming out of breath.
  • Getting through a workday without back pain.
  • Feeling steady on your feet.
  • Managing anxiety better.
  • Recovering after surgery.
  • Returning to sport.
  • Having the energy to enjoy life again.

Exercise Isn’t Just Fitness. It’s Healthcare

Modern research continues to show that regular movement plays a major role in preventing and managing chronic health conditions including:

  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Persistent pain
  • Mental health conditions
  • Falls risk
  • Osteoporosis
  • Recovery after injury or surgery

The tricky part is that many people still think exercise has to look like:

  • Joining a gym
  • Running 10km before sunrise
  • Punishing HIIT sessions
  • Wearing matching activewear that costs more than your electricity bill

It doesn’t. The best exercise program is the one that works for your body, your goals, your lifestyle and your current starting point.

One Size Doesn’t Fit All

One of the biggest messages behind Exercise Right Week is that exercise should be individualised. What’s right for a 22-year-old footballer is very different from what’s right for:

  • A busy parent
  • Someone recovering from surgery
  • A tradie with chronic back pain
  • A person living with arthritis
  • Someone navigating anxiety or depression
  • An older adult wanting to stay independent

That’s where Accredited Exercise Physiologists come in.

Exercise Physiologists are university-qualified allied health professionals who help to prevent, treat and manage chronic injuries and health conditions, disabilities, and complex needs.

So how do we actually do this? Through the safe, evidence based prescription of exercise programs and education.

Small Steps Still Count

The biggest barrier to commencing an exercise program is going too hard too soon. Not only does this deter you from continuing to exercise, but you could also injure yourself. The key is to focus on consistency and slow and steady progress.

Some of the best long-term exercise & movement habits start with incorporating it into your daily life. Whether it be:

  • Walking during lunch breaks
  • Strength exercises at home
  • Gardening
  • Swimming
  • Mobility work
  • Bike riding
  • Group classes
  • Playing with the kids
  • 10-minute movement breaks during the day

Starting with something you enjoy is the easiest way to get your exercise and movement habits going. Because when it comes down to it, you’ve just got to get moving.

Exercise and Mental Health: The Underrated Superpower

Exercise isn’t only physical. Many people notice improvements in:

  • Mood
  • Stress levels
  • Sleep
  • Energy
  • Confidence
  • Concentration
  • Social connection

For some people, movement becomes less about “fitness” and more about reclaiming control, routine and resilience. And importantly, exercise doesn’t have to be intense to be effective. Your body adapts best when exercise is balanced with recovery, progression and realistic expectations.

Our Message This Exercise Right Week

This year, we want people to stop thinking about exercise as a temporary “health kick” and start thinking about it as a lifelong journey. It’s one of the best ways to care for your body. Whether you’re:

  • Returning from injury
  • Starting from scratch
  • Managing a chronic condition
  • Training for performance
  • Looking to improve mental wellbeing
  • Or simply wanting to feel stronger and healthier

…there is always a starting point. And you do not have to figure it out alone.
